Boat Ride Across Lake Konigsee

Located just outside of Bertchesgaden, Lake Konigsee is a must see if you're in southern Bavaria!

Once you park your car, you can take a five minute walk to the Jennerbahn; a cable car ride up the Jenner mountain, or you can walk past a variety of shops and restaurants for a boat ride on the lake. Both are highly recommended!

Lake Koinigsee is nestled against the Waltzmann mountain which has the highest peak of the German Alps. And yes, the water is a gorgeous emerald green. It is claimed to be the cleanest lake in Germany and it's kept that way in part by limiting the boat traffic to electric boats only.

So, at the lakes edge, I bought a ticket and boarded one of the last boats to leave for the day. Somewhere along the way, the captain stopped the boat and a man with a trumpet began to play. And soon, the granite walls of the mountain echoed back. The boat ride goes first to St. Bartholomew's chapel, which can only be reached by boat, and then on to Salat. At Salat, you will find the breathtaking Lake Obersee and the tallest waterfall in Germany, the Rothbach which has a vertical drop of 1,540 ft!
